Avamar 6.1 New Features - Addendum

If you are interested in desktop/laptop backup with Avamar, there a few new features that I omitted in my previous post:

  • You can now restore files backed up from MS Windows to Mac OS X and vice versa.
  • There is a new option to NOT backup over a wireless network.
  • Qualification of IE 9 and Mac OS X 10.7.
  • There is a new option to specify not to never delete the last remaining version of a file.
That last one is my favorite.  Say your backup retention policy keeps backups for one month and then purges them.  This makes sense in a datacenter environment, but what about test/dev or end user environments.  If a machine is disconnected from the network or powered off for longer than the month retention policy, then that machine becomes unprotected until another backup can take place.  This can happen with users that may spend extended time in areas with little or no internet access.  It can also happen with test machines or infrequently used machines that may remain powered off for longer than the retention period. Now, this is no longer an issue.
